History of the Mosaic
Mosaics have been found as early as 4000 BC, in a palace in what was then Macedonia. Roman families also decorated their villas with mosaics. Some of the most well-known mosaics today were found in the excavated cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, in Italy. St. Peter's Basilica in Rome is also embellished with beautiful mosaics.

The Alexander Mosaic, also known as the Battle of Issus, is one of the most famous mosaics in the world. It dates from approximately 200 BC, and depicts the battle between the forces of Alexander the Great and Darius III. It measures 19 X 10 feet, and contains over one and a half million tiny tesserae! In 2003 a copy of this mosaic was made (the original is rather damaged). It took 22 months to finish the mosaic. Can you say, labor-intensive?

It is fascinating to look closely at these mosaics to see the "pointilism" involved in the depiction of the figure of an animal or human being. Each small square of color must be precisely placed and the colors graduated precisely to give the image of realism.

Add a candle next to the bottle and watch the colors glow.

Antique Banjos


In addition to having robust and unique sounds due to their age, antique banjos are impressive collectors' items.? This article profiles a few antique banjos recently spotted on the market.?



Two notable antique banjos are the Gibson four- and five-string banjos from the 1920s and 1930s, and the antique open-back banjos from before 1900. The Gibson Granada five-string solid archtop tone-ring banjo comes with its original tenor neck and both its original hard-shell case as well as a late '50s Ess and Ess five-string hard-shell case. This banjo showcases the famous Gibson tube and plate construction. Its tone ring is one of the earliest of archtops.



The original Kershner-engraved "Granada" tailpiece bears two patent dates: 12/29/14, and 5/9/16; one of the two gold-plated coordinator rods states that it?s ?pat. applied for.? The original resonator has the serial number enameled inside as well as stamped inside the rim. The head is worn, and the maple resonator shows wear and scratches on its back. The newer, matching maple five-string neck has its color accurately matched to the resonator. The neck, made by illustrious Tennessee maker Randy Wood, matches the original heart-and-flower inlays of the tenor. The hard-shell case is prewar with the tenor neck inside it and is included with this sale. This model would likely fetch upwards of $15,000 on the market.



The Gibson TB-3 tenor banjo, which can be converted to the RB3 five-string banjo, has its original metal parts gold plated. It has the famous forty-hole archtop with two-piece flange, whose rim appears to be mahogany while the original resonator is maple. The banjo shows normal signs of wear and comes with a replaced wooden armrest and an Oettinger four-finger tailpiece (which is not typical to find and not appropriate for a five-string). This can be sold with a replica five-string neck, made and installed with a traditional armrest and tailpiece. One will see and hear an absolutely gorgeous prewar Mastertone conversion, forty-hole archtop five-string. This antique banjo would likely sell for more than $7,000.

Somewhere in your area there is most likely an antique store which would be able to assist you to a certain degree but before you go that route make sure it is a reputable business. In dealing with people when it comes to antiques and collector items you may encounter a lot of dishonest people.

Other places to go are places on the internet, but again; make sure those places are reputable. With some of this information hopefully you will be able to get a good start
when it comes to starting out with antiques regardless if you are just collecting them or if you are making antiques your business.

2005 VOLVO S40: Can now be Accentuated with Volvo Performance Parts from Parts Train


The most noteworthy element with this next-generation S40 is the sculpted shoulder line that starts at the front of the car between the headlights and grille and is carried across the beltline all the way back to the taillights. The T5 is available in 2WD or AWD mated to a five -speed Geartronic automatic transmission or a six-speed manual. The T5 trim upgrades by adding a trip computer, front fog lights, automatic climate control, a power driver's seat, and interior wood trim. The optional Climate Package, available on both trims, equips the S40 with heated front seats, rain-sensing wipers, and headlight washers.

Other features of the Volvo S40: Stability and Traction Control (STC), Available Electronically Controlled All Wheel Drive, the Volvo S40 T5 and T5 AWD offer a transversely mounted, 2.5-liter, 5-cylinder turbocharged engine with 218 hp, Ultra-Slim Center Control Panel, 6-speed manual transmission on the S40 T5 and T5 AWD, Intelligent Driver Information System (IDIS).

The new Volvo S40 has the safety equipment that includes dual stage airbags, side airbags, WHIPS (Whiplash Protection System), collapsible pedals, seatbelt pretensioners for the front and rear outer seats, and a force limiter for the front seatbelts. The S40 has anti-lock brakes and emergency brake assistance, while ESP and traction control are also available.
